by: Gary L. Hutchens As noted in a previous article, a number of people either disbelieve outright in the existence of God- atheists- or doubt His existence- agnostics and skeptics. Such individuals would naturally place little stock in the testimony of scripture in proving the reality of God. But there are a number of appeals to logic that serve as powerful evidence that God does exist and that He is the divine creator. The first one, already noted, is the creation itself. The order and synchronism of the universe in general, and everything about this world in particular, demonstrate the obvious existence of a supreme designer behind the design. Order does not arise from chaos, and life does not spring forth from inanimate matter.
A second powerful point of logic is the reality that man is a unique being among all other life forms. Only man is self-aware and self-reasoning. Among all life on this planet, only man has a moral nature. Man has the innate ability, some would say compulsion, to recognize the quality of good, the reality of evil and the difference between the two. Man alone understands the concept of righteousness and its opposite, unrighteousness (Eph. 4:24). Only man has a sense of right and wrong. Why does man stand alone in this regard? The disbeliever is hard pressed to explain this unique and natural character. Oh, he’d probably try to explain it in terms of evolution. But he has no real answer as to how evolution produces moral reasoning. He just says “evolution,” and everyone is supposed to accept that as a reasonable explanation. The believer, on the other hand, instantly knows the answer. God created man different from all other life in that God created man, and man alone, in God’s own image. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Gen. 1:26-27). Only man has a soul, a spiritual identity and essence (Rom. 2:9). Only man is offered the opportunity for eternal life (Rom. 2:7). Of course, as noted earlier, those who don’t believe in God would also reject the teachings of scripture. But, as also already noted, man has an inherent moral nature. There is no reasonable explanation for this fact except that man was created with a spiritual essence, with a soul! Man is unique in character because he was created to be unique, a moral being modeled after the creator Himself (Gen. 5:1). Man’s uniqueness in this regard is powerful evidence of a supremely moral creator- God!… Comments are closed.
