This past Thursday was, in my opinion, one of the great holidays that we celebrate as a nation- Thanksgiving Day! A number of reasons could be listed as to why this is a great holiday, depending on who does the listing. There are few holidays that command as much attention and respect as does this one. To a great extent, the busy pace of our society shifts down into low gear on Thanksgiving Day. Most businesses are closed, and most employees have the day off.
The Political Correctness (PC) Movement has been a huge factor in turning our culture upside down. There has always been, and always will be, a need to be thoughtful, tactful and kind in how we express ourselves as we communicate with others. Everyone has experienced emotional pain as a result of comments that were unduly critical, harsh, insulting, mean, hurtful and demeaning. Sometimes, they’re the result of carelessness. A person who speaks without giving proper consideration to how he should say what he is about to say. Often, however, hurtful comments are simply the product of a person who is mean-spirited, arrogant, uncaring and thoughtless.
As noted in earlier articles in this series, the home is the basic unit of any society. Homes produce the next generation of adults that will their place in society and shape its culture. When homes break down, that weakens their potential to strengthen the culture. The more homes that break down, the greater the detrimental impact. As goes its culture, so goes a nation. Homes in our nation are breaking down at an increasingly alarming rate, and our culture and nation are suffering terribly as a result. But it’s not just the culture of our nation that is being effected.
A third major contributing factor to the breakdown of the home in our culture is the growing tendency for men to not live up to their responsibilities related to being the head of the home. However politically incorrect it might be today, God instructs men to be the head of the home. “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.” (Eph. 5:22-24). That does not mean that wives are inferior to men. Rather, God has simply given men and women different roles in the home.
The previous article in this series focused on the breakdown of the home in our nation. Specifically, it delved into the impact of couples living together outside of marriage and the consequent effect of weakening our homes and culture. As noted, the home is the basic unit of society, producing and training the next generation of adults who will shape our society and culture. Sadly, our homes are crumbling before our eyes. The basic unity of society is rapidly being turned upside down…
