People who live in Nebraska have an inside joke that goes something like, “If you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes…” It’s not just the weather that can change drastically, within a very short period of time. The course of one’s life can change on a dime, and it can happen in a wide variety of ways. How many people have experienced losing their job? It might be due to downsizing or the company being relocated or even being terminated for poor job performance. Whatever the reason, the result is the same- the person no longer has a job. No job means no income, other than what might be collected through unemployment compensation, if and for how long that might be available. Without an income, how does the rent or house note get paid? How do the utilities get paid? How does one pay for food? And what about medical bills and clothing and haircuts and a dozen other common expenses?
How many have had a spouse tell them that they want a divorce? In some cases it seems to happen out of the blue, in others it had been building over a period of time. But, whatever the case, it’s like turning a corner and suddenly having a bucket of cold water thrown in your face. Blindsided! A relationship that had existed for a number of years, sometimes for a great many years, is over. What about the kids? What about your mutual home? What about your livelihood? How did it happen, and why? How many have been moving along through life, everything proceeding on a normally, only to have crash down upon them through some unforeseen accident and subsequent injury? How many folks have heard the Doctor give them the word of a life altering diagnosis, either for themselves or a dear, loved one? Indeed, the disease may even be fatal.
