By: Gary L. Hutchens There’s a line in an old song that says, “Nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could…” That principle is pretty much universally accepted. It is applied in a wide variety of ways throughout society.
By: Gary L. Hutchens With so much confusion on the subject of baptism, what does the Bible really say? There is virtually no doctrine more clearly laid out in scripture than that on baptism. Yet there is incredible confusion on the subject in the denominational world. This article will present, in a concise form, what the Bible teaches on baptism. It will rely only upon scripture. God’s word is the ultimate authority on matters of doctrine. What it says is the final word and settles the matter.

Gary L. Hutchens Baptism is a doctrine that is as clearly taught as pretty much any New Testament doctrine one can think of. If a person simply reads what the scriptures teach on the subject of baptism, he will most likely come away believing correctly. It is truly a pivotal doctrine. It is rather difficult to not understand what the Bible teaches on baptism. The scriptures are, simply put, just that clear on the subject! by Gary L. Hutchens When you talk about making a confession, at the point of a person becoming a Christian, almost invariably people think of confessing sin. But I cannot think of a single place in the New Testament where a person was instructed to make a specific confession of sin as part of the plan of salvation.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian congregation, “For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” (2 Cor. 7:8-10). By: Gary L. Hutchens
What is faith? People talk about faith, claim to have faith, state that faith is a very important, sustaining force in their lives. But many of those do not live a life that demonstrates much faith. Many teach salvation by faith, but what exactly does that means. Ask ten different people, and you can get ten variations of their concept of faith. So, back to our initial question: what is faith By: Gary L. Hutchens
The book of Hebrews gives a great deal of attention to emphasize the superiority of Christ, the gospel, Christianity and the church over Moses, the old law and Judaism. In doing so, the writer provides a lot of information about Christ, giving Him much glory in the process. Note briefly several points made in just the first three verses of the first chapter… By Gary L. Hutchens
“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3-4). These two verses declare, in a nutshell, the gospel. Jesus Christ died on the cross to bear the guilt of our sins, was buried in a tomb and arose from the grave on the third day. By: Gary L. Hutchens
“Hold the line!” It’s an emphatic statement that calls for immediate strength and action and commitment. It even carries the idea of a strong command. One might think of a football team, on a given play, being exhorted by its coach or captain to “Hold the line!” If the opposing team breaks through the line, it could mean the ballgame. By: Gary L. People visit with us here at Sunny Slope all the time. Sometimes, it’s people who are traveling. They’re in town on a Sunday or Wednesday night and stop to worship and study with us. Other times, it’s people who have family or friends who are members here. They visit with us in response to an invitation given them by their family member or friend. Still others simply live in the community, maybe in the neighborhood, and stop in to worship God and check us out. There are also people who were members of the Lord’s church in another part of the country, who have moved to this area and are looking for a good congregation to call home. |
